In addition to his instrumental and theoretical training at the Hamburg Conservatory, Peter Ruzicka studied the law and musicology and received his doctorate with an interdisciplinary dissertation. Among his compositions are the opera "Celan" (first performed in Dresden, 2001) and many orchestral works which had their premieres in major orchestral halls all over the world. As a conductor he works with orchestras like Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 2001 until 2006 he was the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival. Since 1996 he is also the artistic director of Munich’s Biennale Festival. Ruzicka is a professor at the Hamburg Academy of Music and Theater and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts.
