Tonalität: Konzepte und Praxis 1900-1950

The scientific project Tonality: Concepts and Practice 1900-1950 will be devoted to the theoretical and compositional exploration of a phenomenon that has been dismissed in many quarters as historically obsolete and ideologically suspect. For music of the 20thcentury tonality for a long time seemed an outdated musical category, tainted by backwardness or even the reactionary. However, over the past few decades a change has been seen, reflected both in contemporary composition and in the debate on musicology and musical theory which is revealing a new openness to the phenomenon. An academic conference supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in Fall 2010 and a subsequent book publication will explore the different conceptual perceptions as well as the compositional practice of tonality in the first half of the 20thcentury. The project to be held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Duke University of Durham, USA not only aims to extract new facets from the phenomenon of "tonality" but also to open up new perspectives towards the music of the first half of the 20th century in general and, at the same time, make continuities obvious that link the early and late 20th century with each other.
