Composition Commissions issued to Timothy McCormack and Marc Sabat

Four Berlin chamber ensembles for contemporary music – Ensemble Adapter, the Sonar Quartet, Ensemble Apparat and ensemble mosaik – joined together in 2014 to form Ensemblekollektiv Berlin so as to be able to realize pieces of contemporary music with larger line-ups. In 2016/17 this unique body of musicians will be presented in three concerts.
For MaerzMusik 2016 and Ultraschall Berlin 2017 programs have been developed in which one of the four ensembles each determines one concert half. The point of departure here is an existing work for each of the ensembles that arose in collaboration with the composer. On the basis of this work the composer then writes a new piece for the entire line-up of Ensemblekollektiv Berlin.
Two of these new compositions are to be supported by the EvS Music Foundation. Amongst others the MaerzMusik 2016 program features the composer Timothy McCormack. He sees his work Uns-Apparatus, that he developed for Ensemble Apparat in 2013, as a creature that occupies increasing space. With the new work the germ cells of the brass quintet are successively captured by Ensemblekollektiv Berlin while the four individual ensembles act as stand-alone “organisms”.
Forming a central part of Ultraschall Berlin is, among other things, the work of Canadian composer Marc Sabat. He is fascinated by obsessive, meticulous details and seeks the harmonious dimensions of a sound spreading within the space and whose density can only be conveyed by means of temporal stretching. The point of departure for his new work is the string quartet Euler Lattice Spirals Scenery that he composed in 2011 for the Sonar Quartet.
