Composition Commission issued to Salvatore Sciarrino
Fondazione Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Italy
Salvatore Sciarrino, one of the pioneers of Italian contemporary music, is among the best-known composers of the present day. Seven years after the success of Superflumina he is now focusing on opera. Ti vedo, ti sento, mi perdo (I see you, I feel you, I am losing myself) will be his 16th opera composition.
The composition commission supported by the EvS Music Foundation is a co-production with Staatsoper Berlin. It is dedicated to the tragic life of the composer Alessandro Stradella (1639–1682). Once again, here Sciarrino’s interest rests on 16th and 17th century Italian melodrama. In this work that is marked by his unmistakable timbre and characteristic tonal language Sciarrino returns to the origin of the genre: setting a purely internal event to music.
Salvatore Sciarrino has been involved with the Scala of Milan for a long time. The premiere of his debut work, the opera Amore e Psiche, was held at the Piccola Scala in 1973. Four of Sciarrino’s instrumental or vocal works were premiered under the baton of C. Abbado, R. Muti and D. Harding. Ti vedo, ti sento, mi perdo will be the first time a Sciarrino opera appears on the Milan Scala’s main stage.
