soyuz21 – 2018 Season

soyuz21, Basel, Switzerland

Fall of 2018 sees Ensemble soyuz21 realize two different concert programs consisting of a total of seven performances. The line-up is to include premieres by Oliver Weber, Benno Ammann, Anda Kryeziu, Sam Salem, Giovanni Verrando and Mauro Lanza.

The first project deals, among other things, with experimental composer Benno Ammann originally from Gersau but who lived in Basel. After retiring he became a pioneer of Swiss electro-acoustic music and composed electro-acoustic works in studios throughout Europe. His estate is now held at Basel University Library. By means of sketches contained there his 1979 composition Phlox for electric guitar and audio tape (the first Swiss work for electric guitar ever) is to be channeled into a finished version and then premiered. This commission has been taken on by Swiss composer Oliver Weber. In the second project Ensemble Soyuz21 will perform in its full line-up. Light direction and video will form key elements of the evening. The program here will take on societal issues: Anda Kryeziu, currently studying composition at Hochschule für Musik Basel, will be extending her work co for ensemble, video and live electronics to form a larger piece of work. This will be a music, text and video collage about repressive tolerance and freedom of speech. Among those things she weaves into this is a Donald Trump quote: “The beauty of me is that I am very rich”. Furthermore, three other new pieces will be performed: Swiss composer Oliver Weber will be writing a quintet featuring electronics, in his new composition Manchester-based Sam Salem combines video, instruments and live electronics into an energy flux and in Mauro Lanza’s new version of La bataille de Caresme et de Charnage electronic music is to played live on two keyboards.
