Gaudeamus 2023

Gaudeamus Festival and Academy

Stichting Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Utrecht (NL)

From 6 to 10 September 2023, the annual Gaudeamus Festival will take over the Dutch city of Utrecht, a unique international festival of contemporary music, presenting the diversity, vitality and quality of music by the younger generation of composers and music pioneers. Gaudeamus is constantly evolving, feeding the discourse by setting new accents in its programming and drawing inspiration from the wishes and working methods of its young creators. In this way, Gaudeamus is developing more and more into a cross-art festival for young, pioneering and interdisciplinary makers with music as its basis. This year's Gaudeamus Festival and Academy are supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

The festival starts with an academy: an intensive working week in which the composers have plenty of time to collaborate with the musicians who will perform their works. There will be extensive rehearsals, workshops and lessons with well-known composers who will be their coaches during this time, as well as meetings and discussions. After this academy period, the festival begins: five days of concerts, performances, exhibitions and presentations. Gaudeamus presents radical sounds by innovative artists: More than 90 percent of the programmed compositions are new and current works by talented young composers who are at the beginning of their international careers. At Gaudeamus, they are given a professional stage where their works are performed at a high level and where they can test them with their colleagues and the audience. Through the international setting, commissions and international co-productions with important partner festivals and ensembles such as the Ulysses Network, NADAR Ensemble, hcmf, Warsaw Autumn and Quatuor Bozzini, they take big steps in their careers.
