Commission to Michelle Lou

EnsembleKollektiv Berlin (DE)

The Berlin EnsembleKollektiv mediates between different traditions, genres and disciplines. Ensemble Adapter, ensemble mosaik, Sonar Quartett and Ensemble Apparat are the four internationally recognized Berlin ensembles that form a joint ensemble as EnsembleKollektiv Berlin. They are characterized by many years of experience, interpretations at the highest level and clear profiles. Together, these formations complement each other to form an ensemble with new musical possibilities. The participating ensembles continue to work in their own structures with specific artistic and musical ideas and characteristics. The relationship of the individual to the ensemble, the individual ensemble to the collective and the chamber music approach as the basis of the collective work are at the heart of the musical debate. More than just an ensemble, the EnsembleKollektiv is a democratic collaboration that enables numerous musical experiments and the development of new forms.

In addition to works by Ashkan Behzadi and Helmut Lachenmann, the EnsembleKollektiv will premiere a commissioned composition by Michelle Lou at MaerzMusik – body, space and their relationship to each other are the focus of this program.

Michelle Lou's music is characterized by a sculptural character. Her compositional interest is primarily focused on the discursive potential of audio technology. For the work teeth, which is funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, she works with a multi-channel system and uses digital manipulation to raise questions of physicality, its mediation and alienation in space.
