Commission to Moritz Eggert

A masterful, almost one and a half hour long battle of attrition, which has never been seen before: Moritz Eggert composes the percussion concerto Master and Servant for the project Percussion Marathon with Orkest De Ereprijs and percussionist Konstantyn Napolov. Eggert's work is thus part of a unique percussion concert program. The project comprises about 80 minutes of music commissioned from five international composers from three continents. The goal is to approach the music from different creative perspectives and compositional styles, resulting in diverse sound worlds. In some concerts, the soloist performs as an artist, reading poetry while playing a prepared vibraphone with electronics and tiger gongs, expressing dynamics in specific movements.

What is exciting about the collaboration between Orkest De Ereprijs, percussionist Konstantyn Napolov and Moritz Eggert is that while Eggert has a lot of experience with percussion, he hasn’t written percussion leading pieces in 15 years. In addition, Eggert has never written a percussion concerto for an ensemble. Master and Servant will also feature the instrument "Eva," which was developed specifically for Eggert. "Eva" is an acoustic instrument in the shape of an orange with opening parts that combine different instruments in one, resonating and mixing sounds that have never been connected acoustically. Describing the concert, percussionist Konstantyn Napolov says:"I strongly believe that Master and Servant will become a unique concerto that will take the lead in the whole project. For when the composer is challenged by the performer to do something unusual, bringing the composer out of his style comfort zone, it will create a ‘fresh’ approach that results in an unforgettable experience for the public and a masterpiece that performers around the world would love to perform." The composition commission to Moritz Eggert for the Dutch Golden Collection Foundation is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
