Commission to Piyawat Louilarpprasert
Southeast Asia New Music and Art Foundation, Bangkok (TH)
The SANMA Foundation and the Thailand Music and Art Organization will host the fifth annual new music and art festival, IntAct, in December 2023 at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre under the theme of Making.
The festival aims to explore the process of creation by cultural practitioners from all disciplines, showcase works that incorporate the use of innovative technological techniques and enable the discovery of unexplored soundscapes. The festival invites internationally recognized and emerging artists, composers and performers to present their works and perspectives at the festival.
The three-day festival includes six performances as well as concerts and art exhibitions. The final performance of the festival is a collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Orchestra, for which Thai composer Piyawat Louilarpprasert will be commissioned to compose a work. The commission to Piyawat Louilarpprasert is sponsored by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
In his music, Piyawat Louilarpprasert is generally concerned with the fusion of acoustic and visual art. This includes the integration of multimedia and music, the deconstruction of the mechanics and physicality of instruments with methods of sound production, and the incorporation of traditional Thai musical elements into new compositions. Specifically for the new composition commission, Piyawat expresses his personal sonic identity and demonstrates the art and process of sound production. This includes creating new instruments, exploring the possibilities of sound and instrumental extension, and challenging orchestral musicians to use their instruments in new ways, all within an environment of creative creation. Louilarpprastert's work promises to showcase the vibrancy and richness of global contemporary culture in innovative and exciting ways.
