Four Commissions

Trio Amos, Vienna (AT)

Fremd–Vertraut

The foreign is familiar, the familiar is foreign. The idea that this pair of terms indicates a contrast is unworldly. Every dream is a journey into the foreign. Everything familiar becomes strange on closer inspection. Only one tenth of the human body is actually human. The rest illustrates healthy coexistence with strangers in one's own body. (Hans Hütt)

Trio Amos commissions four female composers. Even though women composers have always contributed a part of the repertoire since the beginning of Trio Amos' joint work, in retrospect their share has never been more than a quarter. Therefore, the trio wants to dedicate this project to this topic and take a closer look at whether and what can still be gained from this well-known topos. The project title Fremd–Vertraut reflects several aspects of foreignness and familiarity: four women (Zeynep Gedizlioğlu, Irene Galindo Quero, Nina Šenk, Francesca Verunelli), four languages, four stories of origin, communication, cultural identity. To make these different aspects tangible for the audience in a project with Trio Amos is a goal of this work. Ultimately, the question remains whether even a single one of the aforementioned aspects can be heard in the music of the evening, or whether the theme is not rather about atmospheric aspects in the work and the framework conditions of composing for female composers in general. The four commissions to Zeynep Gedizlioğlu, Irene Galindo Quero, Nina Šenk and Francesca Verunelli are made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
