Be the Future – Compose it yourself!
Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (DE)
The educational project Be the Future – compose it yourself! of the Zukunftslabor of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen aims to use modern approaches to music and improvisation education not only to introduce pupils to music, arouse their interest and encourage them to make music themselves, but also to let them become composers themselves. The project, which is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, takes place in the Zukunftslabor and the Gesamtschule Bremen-Ost in the socially disadvantaged district of Osterholz-Tenever. The result is a fascinating symbiosis of different worlds: the everyday lives of pupils and professional musicians meet and merge.
Be the Future – compose it yourself! is part of the project Club 443 Hz of the Zukunftslabor 2022. The music mediator and composer Mark Withers leads the project. It is important to him that the musical values conveyed remain and are consolidated in the long term – and not just have a temporary influence. In the project, he initially works with some classes of the Bremen-Ost Gesamtschule. With them, he develops various small compositions in an open creative process. The starting point is musical motifs for certain parts of a story, a film scene or a theatrical scene. The aim is to set as few limits as possible to their own creativity. The music should speak the language of the district from which the students come. In the next step, these compositions are arranged for the professional musicians of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and rehearsed together with all participants. An important step is that the compositions of the pupils are then carried on and made to sound by an orchestra, which appreciates the work of the young people. The results of this open composition process are being presented at the Club 443 Hz event in September 2022.
