Du Yun: Angel’s Bone

Oper Wuppertal (DE)

"In the wrong hands, feathers become spines". A quote from the music theater piece Angel's Bone by Du Yun, which will be performed in September 2023 at the Alte Gläserei in Wuppertal. The New York-based Chinese composer received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2017 for this work. The jury said it was a bold operatic work that integrates vocal and instrumental elements and a wide range of styles into a harrowing allegory for human trafficking in the modern world. Du Yun brings to the stage a moving, at times disturbing parable that explores the dark effects of modern slavery and human trafficking, as well as the psyche of human traffickers*. Alongside the performances, the Wuppertal Opera offers a supporting program with discussions and accompanying events to make an artistic as well as socio-political statement against this crime, which is often ignored in European culture.
