Pnima ... Ins Innere - Chaya Czernowin

Staatstheater Darmstadt (DE)

"If you recognise the suffering of others, one can stop the metamorphosis of the victim becoming the perpetrators," says Chaya Czernowin. In her opera Pnima... Ins Innere (into the inside), she deals with the traumas of Holocaust survivors. The nine-year-old Israeli boy Momik tries to find out what trauma weighs on his parents and grandparents. But everyone is silent, no one talks to him about the Holocaust. Music, syllables, sounds and noises make the unspeakable audible. Pnima is about an untold story that needs to be told. As a child in Israel, Chaya Czernowin experienced for herself how taboo and hermetic the emotional world of Holocaust survivors was for the following generation. The pain and hurt were so great that they could not be talked about. Even the children and grandchildren cannot easily detach themselves from the traumas of the Holocaust.

This opera was created in 2020 for the Münchener Biennale. Due to the current situation, the Staatstheater Darmstadt has made a last-minute change to its programme in order to present this piece. "With this production, we as a cultural institution want to do our part to break the deafening silence that has been heard since the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel on October 7th," says the Staatstheater Darmstadt.
