Prague OffSpring 2023

Pražské jaro, Prague (CZ)

Prague OffSpring is a unique event of the Prague Spring Festival that takes place over two days at the DOX Art Centre in the former industrial and now art district of Holešovice in Prague. Prague OffSpring is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Ensemble-in-residence this year is Klangforum Wien. Georg Friedrich Haas, one of the most important composers of our time, is also composer-in-residence.

The programme includes two major works by Haas. In a public interview organised by the festival, he will be in conversation with the audience, the New Music community and students. There will also be music by György Ligeti, whose centenary will be celebrated in spring 2023.  For the 2023 edition, Prague Spring is commissioning six new works: Jana Vöröšová, one of the leading Czech composers of her generation, is writing a large work for large ensemble entitled Lunapark. Five short works for medium-sized ensemble will be written by younger Czech composers - Michaela Pálka Plachká, František Chaloupka, Pavel Šabacký, Šimon Voseček and Matouš Hejl.

Klangforum Wien is involved in two mediation projects: In the framework of Reading Lessons for composition students, a young composer will be selected to write a short piece for the next edition of Prague OffSpring. There will also be a master class for young instrumentalists who are engaged in the interpretation of contemporary music.

In addition, the festival invites several festival directors of contemporary music from Western and Eastern Europe to participate in the events and panel discussions in order to establish contacts and develop future cooperation. The whole project aims to offer the audience a complex and interesting mix of events and to deepen the cooperation between the Czech contemporary music scene and its international counterparts.
