American Immersion: Beat Furrer

Talea Ensemble, Long Island City, New York, USA

Beat Furrer will bring Furrer’s music into the foreground of the American cultural community. Beat Furrer will engage in activities that will present him as the composer and person he is to a variety of different audiences. Mr. Furrer’s time in New York will encompass a variety of types of engagement that are supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation: open rehearsals, lectures, in-concert discussions, and three evening performances culminating in the American premiere of Furrer’s masterpiece chamber-opera, FAMA. The focus of Beat Furrer’s time in New York will be the preparation and performance of a concert-version of this masterpiece. The chamber-opera is scored for 22 instrumentalists, 8 singers, and an actress. The Talea Ensemble will join forces with the virtuosic New York-based vocal ensemble, Ekmeles, and actress Bo Chang. The musical direction will be lead by American conductor James Baker.
Three nights prior to the performances of FAMA, the ensemble will present an evening of Beat Furrer’s chamber music at the Austrian Cultural Forum. The works will act as an introduction to Furrer’s sound-world, for those who are not yet familiar with his music. By giving the audience an up close opportunity to meet this extraordinary composer through an in-concert discussion; they will have an opportunity to relate human to human, thus fostering a more sympathetic relationship with his music.
