Darmstadt weekend: “Post-War World” at Southbank Centre

Southbank Centre, London, UK

Post-War World will be a weekend of concerts, talks, workshops, free activities and films celebrating key composers from the Darmstadt School 1945-1960 including Stockhausen, Ligeti, Boulez and Messiaen. The weekend takes place as part of Southbank Centre's year-long classical music festival 'The Rest Is Noise' (TRIN), so called after Alex Ross' book of the same name.
Taking the book as inspiration, Southbank Centre has curated over 100 events to create a chronological journey through the most important 20th century music, framing it with the social, cultural and political changes that took place. The festival encourages new audiences to discover and explore contemporary classical music, and established audiences to gain new perspectives on some of the most celebrated works of the century.
With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the weekend focusing on Post-War World will introduce some of the century’s most challenging work, which remains as challenging to audiences in the new century. The lead piece for the weekend will be Stockhausen’s “Gesang der Jünglinge” which will be performed on Sunday, October 6.
