DASTGAH – Festival of Contemporary Iranian Music and Art

Hannoversche Gesellschaft für Neue Musik e.V., Hanover, Germany

Contemporary art in Iran is created under extremely difficult conditions. Music is eyed suspiciously, films are banned and galleries exist in a grey zone. Nevertheless, and indeed partly because of this, Iran’s contemporary art displays a very individual profile.
The DASTGAH Festival was initiated and is coordinated by Hanover’s New Music society Hannoversche Gesellschaft für Neue Musik and is supported by the EvS Music Foundation. It showcases what preoccupies composers, artists, architects, writers and film makers from Iran and what artistic media they use in their work. Women are particularly in focus here featuring, amongst other things, as composers and performers. Participants include both people who currently live and carry out their artistic work in Iran and those who were born in Iran and who now live in Germany.
In two concerts three generations of leading Iranian composers will be presented with works especially written for the festival. Beyond the topic of migration the events pick up on other key artistic and political issues.
