Composition Commission to Anna Zaradny and Martin Smolka

HowNow, Saint-Denis, France

We are all lichens, conceived by soprano Juliet Fraser and double bassist Florentin Ginot, presents a meeting on stage of the sparse and minimalist music of Martin Smolka and the powerful, noisy electronic sound of Anna Zaradny. The two commissioned works, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, will premiere in a concert format where lighting design, space and sound immersion become part of the public experience.

"We are all lichens; so we can be scraped off the rocks by the Furies, who still erupt to avenge crimes against the earth." These words by Donna Haraway, found in her book Staying with the Trouble (2016), capture some of the background themes of the musical project: environmentalism, feminism, the danger of discontinuity and the potential of disruption.
