Composition Commission to Isabel Mundry

Mozartfest Würzburg, Germany

In 2022, Isabel Mundry will be the first composer selected to be Artiste étoile at Mozartfest Würzburg. Within this context, the EvS Music Foundation is funding a composition commission by Mundry for this anniversary Mozart Festival whose motto reads "All in One: The Freethinker Mozart".

Part of the Mozart Festival's very DNA is to confront the classical musical heritage with the present. What do Mozart and his music mean to us in the 21st century? Where is it close to us today and where is it far away? Isabel Mundry's work makes it clear that this question is not just a musical one, but above all a cultural, macrosocietal and sociological one, one also with philosophical dimensions. In the programs she curates in Würzburg, Mundry focuses on questions of identity and the inescapable impact of one's own present. She cites the impact of one on the other, the looping back to the past, the transmission and continuation of history(ies) as core concepts of her composing – also in relation to Mozart.
