Composition Commission: Grunelius-Konzerte – quartetaffairs 2016

Frankfurter Bürgerstiftung, Frankfurt, Germany

The concert series “Grunelius-Konzerte – quartetaffairs” has been held annually since 2014 as part of the string quartet conference “Streichquartetttage” in the new, acoustically unique chamber music hall at Frankfurt’s Holzhausenschlösschen. Once again in 2016 Professor Oliver Wille will be Artistic Director for the series which focuses on newly composed works. For this the city’s civic trust Frankfurter Bürgerstiftung will be issuing four composition commissions for string quartet – three of which are to be supported by the EvS Music Foundation.
One of these is for a commission to the composer Stephen Hartke who has created a new work for a concert by the Bretano Quartet. The audience will also be able to enjoy the German premiere of Bruno Mantovani’s third string quartet for the Signum Quartet. Finally, the Kuss Quartet will be performing a new composition by Aribert Reimann.
On each day of the event a so-called “Hör-Oase” or “Audio Oasis” will be held to introduce the concert. This will allow interested listeners a dialog with the artists and composers helping them to understand the new work and its genesis. The “Audio Oases” will take the form of panel discussions accompanied by sound examples.
