Bilkent Composition Academy 2019

Bilkent Saygun Center for Music Education and Research, Ankara, Turkey

The Bilkent Composition Academy (BCA) is an international summer academy in Ankara, aimed at offering young composers an opportunity to learn the profession. The first workshops took place in 2017 and this successful format is expected to continue biannually. In addition to providing a week-long training course, the aim of the academy is to enable participants to build networks not only in Turkey, but also regionally, within Europe or even worldwide.

The 2019 Bilkent Composition Academy is formed of three modules: module one is ‘ensemble’, module two is ‘string quartet’ and module three is ‘Maqam Composition Today’, the latter of which is a research module led by the composer, pianist and conductor Mahir Cetiy (University of Columbia, New York, USA), the composer and music-ethnologist Michael Ellison (University of Bristol, UK) and music-sociologist Ali Ergur (Galatasaray University, Istanbul, Turkey). The module provides a theoretical basis through presentations and discussions. Module one, ‘ensemble‘, was led by a professor of composition and the Cikada Ensemble from Oslo. This ensemble, founded in 1989 with Christian Eggen as conductor, has built a highly-respected profile within the international music scene, associated with living and virtuosic performers of a high-quality repertoire under the term Oslo Sound. For module two, the academy was honoured to host the German-French composer Mark Andre, a creator of existential experience-spaces within his music. Alongside him, the extraordinary JACK Quartet from New York helped teach the participants. Additional seminars, talks, workshops, podium discussions, interviews, pre-concert talks etc. have been organised to bring life to the practical and theoretical content of the course, with concerts at both the beginning and end of the BCA 2019 training week. The initial concerts open their respective modules with musical portraits of the composers present, while the closing concerts present the works of the course participants.
