akademie kontemporär – Listening East!

University of Music and Theatre, Hamburg, Germany

akademie kontemporär has set itself the task of promoting highly talented young musicians in the field of New Music thereby helping them on their path to a professional career. The aim is to provide new impulses and enrich and diversify the contemporary music scene. The program includes the exploration of innovative concert formats as well as artistic engagement with different styles of contemporary music. At the same time, the academy's opening event under the motto "Listening East!" is also a musical nod to Hamburg's traditional ties to the Baltic States now framed in the present day, thus strengthening awareness about New Music in this Hanseatic city. For instance, it has been possible to enlist Gidon Kremer as visiting artist and members of the Kremerata Baltica as ensemble-in-residence for the academy. In addition, Lithuanian composer Justė Janulytė and Lithuanian conductor Martynas are also involved in the academy.

In terms of content, akademie kontemporär consists of several elements: The ensemble-in-residence and visiting artist coach the participants in intensive rehearsals, working with them on the pieces featured in the program. The rehearsals are supplemented by classes held by professors and lecturers from the university, who are available as part of their teaching duties for courses in career development, presentation and audience building.
