Composition Commission issued to Benedict Mason

Kultur Ruhr GmbH, Bochum, Germany

What make the projects of British composer and performer Benedict Mason stand out are the artist’s great interest in breaking or changing existing structures and habits of both the producing artists and the audience. His projects are choreographies of musical language, crossover productions and, in this sense, very much in keeping with the concept of CREATIONS as produced by the Ruhrtriennale. For Ruhrtriennale 2020, Benedict Mason is planning to explore industrial installations in Bochum: together with musicians, singers, actors and performers – amateurs and professionals alike – he will design a tour of the site allowing the audience to embark on a journey into the heart of architecture together with the performers. Those involved from the region will be members of bands and orchestras, choirs and associations as well as professional musicians, singers and actors. The focus here will be on sharpening the senses and perception in space and time: the sounds, noises and movements result in a composition reflecting the experience of the specific location, whose history and present can thus be felt in a new way.
