Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2020

Stichting Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Utrecht, Netherlands

The international festival Gaudeamus Muziekweek presents the diversity, vitality and quality of music of today's young generation of composers and music pioneers from all over the world. This focus makes the Gaudeamus Muziekweek a unique festival that begins with an academy where composers have time to work together with the musicians who will perform their works. There are extensive rehearsals, workshops and private lessons. After the academy the five-day festival begins.

The highlight of the programme is the renowned Gaudeamus Award. For 2020, the international jury is composed of Oscar Bettison (US), Saed Haddad (Jordan) and Calliope Tsoupaki (Greece/Netherlands), who will select four composers (two female and two male) as candidates for the Gaudeamus Award 2020. Three works of each of the chosen composers are on the programme, one of which is a commissioned work for Ensemble Vonk, the Duo Zöller - Roche or the Canadian ensemble Standing Wave. The ensembles will already be present during the Academy and will perform publicly through videos, concert introductions and interviews. The festival will also program a new work by Oscar Bettison, commissioned jointly with the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble, and a new work by Saed Haddad. In 2020 Gaudeamus celebrates its 75th anniversary and therefore awards numerous composition commissions to Dutch and foreign composers.
