Global Breath Composers Project

Ludwigsburg Festival (DE)

As part of the Ludwigsburg Festival 2023, the Global Breath Composers Project will take place in collaboration with trumpeter Marco Blaauw. The project, which is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, focuses on the long-term, dialogical collaboration of composers who work differently and their engagement with the trumpet. In addition, a symposium will be held on the Global Breath research project. Marco Blaauw is collaborating on the project with composers Isabel Mundry, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, George Lewis, Raven Chacon, Dai Fujikura, Liza Lim and Milica Djordjevic.

The Global Breath Composers Project addresses the classical division of roles between composer – performer – listener: the performer is the composer of the group and the initiator of the dialogues. The composer selects the material from what the performer offers. Subsequently, the perception of the listener also becomes part of the project. To deepen this new distribution of roles, the commitment to a long-term collaboration is essential. In order to give a solid foundation to the new content that emerges from the dialogues between the composers and Marco Blaauw, it takes time, practice and contact with the world. What works? How does the listener experience it? The composers are also invited to a three-day symposium with lectures, roundtables and informal exchange. Through regular contact and the exchange of topics, further new works should emerge.

Building long-term collaborations with composers has always been an important part of Blaauw's activity. Significant examples include work with Mauricio Kagel, Peter Eötvös, Liza Lim, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Rebecca Saunders. Several years of collaboration have deepened the exchange between composer and performer, resulting in a unique sound language. As a trumpet player, Marco Blaauw became a participant in the entire compositional process. In many cases, this exchange led to new discoveries in the field of playing technique and instrument making. New sounds could be tested and applied over a period of many years through the method of trial and error, to then become an integral part of the modern trumpet repertoire.
